MR. SPEAKER: Order, please. Just before we begin the daily routine, I would like to bring to the attention of all honourable members that today will be the last day of one our longest-serving Pages in the Legislature. Jamie MacDonald is leaving today but fortunately she is taking up new duties in the Protocol office, mentor duties and I know that Jamie has served this House well. We are going to miss you, Jamie, and we wish all the very best in your career. Good luck and thank you very much. (Applause)
We will begin the daily routine.

PETITION the PROVINCE OF NOVA SCOTIA to REPAIR our gravel roads to a point where they are passable all year round and keep them in good condition." There are approximately 54 names on this petition and I have affixed my signature as well.

MR. SPEAKER: Ordered that this bill be read a second time on a future day.
NOTICES OF MOTION
MR. SPEAKER: The honourable member for Timberlea-Prospect.
RESOLUTION NO. 4039
MR. WILLIAM ESTABROOKS: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the member for Sackville-Beaver Bank compares himself to Maple Leafs tough guy and role player, Tie Domi, who wants off the bench but can't get a pass from his teammates; and
Whereas unlike the proud tradition of true Maple Leaf team players like Bobby Baun, Tiger Williams and Pat Quinn, the member forgets you have to get the puck and then you have to keep it; and
Whereas the member more closely resembles legendary Leaf floater Inge Hammerstrom, who could go into a corner with an egg basket full of amendments and get none of them accepted;
Therefore be it resolved that the member for Sackville-Beaver Bank be sent back to the political skills camp until he learns to skate with the big players of this House.
Mr. Speaker, I request waiver of notice.
MR. SPEAKER: There has been a request for waiver.
Is it agreed?
I hear several Noes.
The notice is tabled.
The honourable member for Cape Breton West.
RESOLUTION NO. 4040
MR. RUSSELL MACKINNON: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas on Wednesday, May 21, 2002, the Minister of Environment and Labour stated in a media scrum that it was inappropriate for him to speak directly to an employee in his department who is investigating the complaint of an ammonia nitrate leak; and
Whereas the Minister of Environment and Labour had no difficulty visiting Baltzer Bog with the same employee on March 25, 2002 while several complaints about Baltzer Bog were before his department;
Therefore be it resolved that the Minister of Environment and Labour explain why he adheres to double-talk and double standards when it comes to the safety of Nova Scotians and Nova Scotia's environment.
MR. SPEAKER: The notice is tabled.
The honourable member for Sackville-Beaver Bank on an introduction.
MR. BARRY BARNET: Mr. Speaker, today, in our east gallery, we have with us Alexander Smith who is job shadowing me. Alexander is a Grade 10 student from Lockview School. He has political interests and Alexander and his family have worked very hard to further the interest of their community, particularly in areas of sewer and water for Beaver Bank. I would like to ask you to give Alexander the usual applause and welcome to this House. (Applause)
MR. SPEAKER: I certainly welcome Alexander to the gallery today and hope he enjoys the proceedings.
The honourable member for Annapolis.
RESOLUTION NO. 4041
MR. FRANK CHIPMAN: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas thanks to the very able medical personnel and crew of the Provincial Air Ambulance and a Labrador helicopter, an injured 84-year-old was safely brought to the Valley Regional Hospital from a remote island in Alma Lake, Annapolis County; and
Whereas reaching the gentlemen at the remote island was not an easy feat, as the rescue began following a boat trip by one of the man's companions to shore and a hike through the woods to telephone for help to the Middleton Ambulance Station; and
Whereas the helicopter, just one hour later, reached the island but had no place to land, so the medical personnel jumped about a metre from the hovering craft to the water's edge just as the land crew arrived by boat - the teams were then assisted by a Labrador helicopter that took both the patient and the crew to shore;
Therefore be it resolved that all MLAs applaud the efforts of this dedicated medical team and the Labrador crew who went to great lengths, by boat and by air, to provide immediate medical care to one of our province's citizens.
Mr. Speaker, I request waiver of notice.
MR. SPEAKER: There has been a request for waiver.
Is it agreed?

Whereas the motto of the Cornwallis Street United Baptist Church, "We Enter to Worship, We Go Out to Serve," is reflected in the care and compassion of its congregation and clergy; and
Whereas from May 21st to May 26th, Cornwallis Street United Baptist Church will celebrate 170 years of faithful Christian service in the City of Halifax;
Therefore be it resolved that members of the Nova Scotia Legislature extend our congratulations and best wishes for a successful celebration of the 170th Anniversary of the Cornwallis Street United Baptist Church.

Whereas the centre is helping preserve and promote Cape Breton crafters involved in rug hooking, quilting, hand weaving, basketry, stained glass, painting and decorative art; and
Whereas the centre will soon launch its newly-designed Web site for Cape Breton craftspeople, artisans and others involved in the craft industry, which will greatly enhance their ability to market, promote and sell their creations;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of the House congratulate the Cape Breton Centre for Craft and Design and Executive Director Carol Beaton for providing a vibrant and strong support structure for both professional and aspiring craftspeople of Cape Breton Island.

Whereas effective public speaking is an asset the members of this House can easily appreciate; and
Whereas Sgt. Matthew Paugh of the 652 Milford and District Royal Canadian Air Cadets won a gold medal for placing first at the provincial level at the annual Cadet League Effective Speaking Contest and he will now go on to the national competition in June at Niagara Falls;
