HON. JAMES MUIR: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas there are many outstanding health care providers in our province who work daily to improve the health of their patients; and
Whereas the Cape Breton District Health Authority has decided to honour such tremendous contributions with an annual Health Care Provider of the Year Award; and
Whereas the first winner of this award, Mary MacIsaac, a Diabetic Nurse at the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney and a RN for over 40 years, who continually makes a difference in the health and lives of her patients through her expertise and caring attitude;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of the House congratulate Mary MacIsaac on her award and her tireless commitment to her patients and profession and also to the Cape Breton District Health Authority for recognizing outstanding health care providers in their district.

HON. NEIL LEBLANC: M. le Président, à une date ultérieure, j'ai l'intention de proposer l'adoption de la résolution suivante:
Attendu que depuis 1980, les Jeux régionaux de l'Acadie contribuent au développement du leadership et de l'excellence dans les sports chez les jeunes francophones et acadiens de la Nouvelle-Écosse; et
Attendu que plus de 600 jeunes participeront aux Jeux de l'Acadie de la Nouvelle-Écosse qui se dérouleront cette fin de semaine dans la belle région d'Argyle; et
Attendu que les Jeux de l'Acadie sont un événement spécial qui rassemble toutes les régions acadiennes et qui est rendu possible grâce au travail de plus de 300 bénévoles;
Qu'il soit résolu que cette Chambre souhaite bonne chance à tous les athlètes et transmette ses félicitations aux entraîneurs, aux parents et à tous les bénévoles qui participent aux Jeux régionaux de l'Acadie et les remercie pour leurs contributions au développement de la jeunesse francophone et acadienne de la Nouvelle-Écosse.

Whereas since 1980, the Acadian Games have contributed to the development of leadership and excellence in sports in young Acadians and francophones in Nova Scotia; and
Whereas more than 600 young people will be participating in the Acadian Games being held in the beautiful region of Argyle this weekend; and
Whereas the Acadian Games are a very special event which brings together all the Acadian communities and is made possible through the involvement of more than 300 volunteers;
Therefore be it resolved that this House send good wishes for success to all the athletes and offer congratulations to all the coaches, parents and volunteers for taking part in the Acadian Games and thank them for their commitment to the development of young Acadians and francophones in our province.

Whereas Halifax Chronicle-Herald columnist Joel Jacobson has been named recipient of the Peter Gzowski Literacy Award of Merit; and
Whereas the national award recognizes the talent, effort and commitment required to achieve quality reporting on issues related to literacy; and
Whereas Mr. Jacobson won the award for his feature articles on literacy programs for children and the personal struggles of adults with little formal schooling;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House congratulate Joel Jacobson on the honour of receiving the Peter Gzowski Literacy Award of Merit.

RESOLUTION NO. 3948
MS. MAUREEN MACDONALD: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas in the May 16th Truro Daily News the Health Minister states that he opposes a free vote on his own smoke-free legislation; and
Whereas the Health Minister felt differently when it came time to vote on the 1999 Liberal legislation imposing a partial ban on tobacco sales and he was one of five Tories who voted against that bill; and
Whereas the minister actually claims there is all-Party support for his legislation;
Therefore be it resolved that the Health Minister should have the courage and the consistency to seek a vote in this House on the question of a total ban to make Nova Scotia smoke-free so he knows where the members of all three Parties stand.

MR. WAYNE GAUDET: Mr. Speaker, I would like to present my resolution in French first.
M. le Président, par la présente, j'avise que je proposerai à une date ultérieure l'adoption de la résolution suivante:
Attendu que plus de 600 athlètes participeront aux 18ième Jeux de l'Acadie le 16 à 18 mai dans la région de Par-en-Bas; et
Attendu que les jeunes athlètes représenteront les régions de Chéticamp, Halifax, Rive-Sud, Clare, Par-en-Bas, Sydney, Dartmouth, Pomquet, Truro, Greenwood, ainsi que Richmond; et
Attendu que le Comité provincial des Jeux de l'Acadie a comme mission de valoriser et de promouvoir la culture et la langue acadienne et francophone chez la jeunesse acadienne de la Nouvell-Écosse en organisant des activités sportives et culturelles;
Qu'il soit résolu que les membres de cette Chambre félicitent le comité organisateur des Jeux de l'Acadie 2002, les nombreux bénévoles qui continuent à rendre service à la communauté acadienne et à tous les jeunes athlètes qui vont participer aux jeux régionaux cette fin de semaine.

Whereas this long weekend more than 600 athletes from across the province will gather in Argyle for the 18th Annual Jeux de l'Acadie; and
Whereas delegations will represent the regions of Cheticamp, Halifax, Rive-Sud, Clare, Par-en-Bas, Sydney, Dartmouth, Pomquet, Truro, Greenwood, ainsi que Richmond; and
Whereas the Comité provincial des Jeux de l'Acadie mission is to promote the Acadian and francophone language and culture among the youth of Nova Scotia through the organization of sporting and cultural events;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House of Assembly extend their congratulations and best wishes to the organizing committee, the many volunteers who contribute countless hours to promoting the Acadian and francophone culture, and to all the athletes who will participate in the games this weekend.

RESOLUTION NO. 3950
MR. BROOKE TAYLOR: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the federal Liberal gun registration process, which is supported by the Nova Scotia Liberal caucus and both federal and provincial NDP caucuses, has been flawed from the start; and
Whereas no better indication of this flawed process exists than when the spokesperson for the Canadian Firearms Centre said recently, ". . . about six hundred thousand Canadians holding gun licences have yet to register their guns."; and
Whereas the most recent ineptitude shown by the Liberals' costly bungling of gun registration has resulted in 600,000 reminder letters having been sent out no later than June 1st, at a cost to the Canadian taxpayers of more than $0.25 million, on top of the already-spent $800 million;
Therefore be it resolved that the MLAs in this House of Assembly roundly condemn the federal Liberal Government's approach to gun registration and their continued waste of taxpayers' dollars on this registration scheme, which is now thought to be well over $0.5 billion.

MR. WILLIAM ESTABROOKS: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the film Star Wars - Attack of the Clones has just opened across North America and Nova Scotia; and
Whereas in this film, armies of clones are unleashed against the forces of freedom and democracy; and
Whereas when it comes to a total ban making Nova Scotians smoke-free, the Conservative Government wants its caucus to be an army of clones rather than MLAs who exercise their democratic freedom to represent their constituents;
Therefore be it resolved that the Premier and the Health Minister should take a lesson from the movies and realize that when it comes to anti-smoking legislation, even the attack of the clones is not enough to quell the spirit of freedom and democracy.

RESOLUTION NO. 3952
MR. KERRY MORASH: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas with the support of music teachers, family and friends, the annual Queens County Music Festival has provided an opportunity for young musicians to demonstrate their talent for almost 60 years; and
Whereas this year the festival was adjudicated by three very capable judges, Pamela Campbell adjudicating voice and choir, Diane Torbet judging piano, and Ron MacKay adjudicating instrumental; and
Whereas with community and corporate support this festival has flourished and that provides many students with scholarships to help further their musical skills and interests;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House applaud the Queens County Music Festival for encouraging young people to explore their musical interests and thank adjudicators Pamela Campbell, Diana Torbet and Ron MacKay, as well as the festival's corporate sponsors, for supporting this wonderful community event.

MR. ROBERT CHISHOLM: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Chief Andrew Sullivan, Captain Tony Boyd, former Chief Tom Cooper and firefighter Archie Fraser were relieved of their duties as members of the Herring Cove Volunteer Fire Department, although they feel that no reason has been given for this action; and
Whereas as a result the deputy chief, two other captains, six firefighters, four recruits, the fundraising group and others resigned from the department; and
Whereas the department thereby lost nearly 300 years of dedicated volunteer experience;
Therefore be it resolved that this House regret the disruption in the Herring Cove District Fire Department, and urge the Halifax Regional Municipality to honour the department's volunteer spirit and proud history of community service by working with the community to regain trust and participation.

Whereas each year during the Apple Blossom Festival, a blossom queen is chosen from among princesses representing several apple-growing communities based on character, poise and personality; and
Whereas Lindsay Jean Young has been crowned Princess Kentville; and
Whereas Lindsay, a long-time student of Kings County Academy and a graduate of Horton High, is currently studying at Acadia University where she hopes to pursue an education degree and teach in the Annapolis Valley;
Therefore be it resolved that members of this House congratulate Lindsay Jean Young and wish her success in making her future as a teacher in the Valley.

MR. KEVIN DEVEAUX: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas 5,000 Afghan children recently returned to school for the first time in several years; and
Whereas these children will be fortunate to receive supplies for the next school year due to collaborated efforts of UNICEF's Atlantic Region's "Back to School in Afghanistan" campaign and the Nova Scotia Teachers Union "Sabak - Afghanistan's Return of Learning" relief campaign; and
Whereas students and teachers at 70 Nova Scotia schools raised more than $27,000 to assist with the development of educational kits containing books, pens, rulers, crayons, paints and other supplies to educate 80 students for an entire school year;
Therefore be it resolved that this House extend our congratulations to the Nova Scotia Teachers Union and UNICEF for a successful campaign, and thank all students, parents and educators at schools throughout our province for their contributions to this worthwhile cause to assist students in Afghanistan.

RESOLUTION NO. 3956

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the Gilbert's Cove and District Historical Society assumed the maintenance and operation of the Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse in 1985; and
Whereas this lighthouse, built in 1905, is a valuable part of our marine heritage and has on exhibit the quarters of the keeper, the light and many local artifacts; and
Whereas this non-profit group has, through its own fundraising efforts, operated the facility for the education and enjoyment of the public;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House recognize the valuable contribution of the members of the society to the preservation of this historic site for future generations.
RESOLUTION NO. 3957

Whereas the Town of Springhill recently held its annual Volunteer Appreciation Night; and
Whereas the award for Volunteer Group of the Year was presented to the Palliative Care Group at the All Saints Hospital; and
Whereas members of the Palliative Care Group are Connie Gilbert, Rob MacDonald, Cindy Oickle, Eleanor Beaton, Bev Hunter, Janet Arseneau, Bea Alick, Marilyn Maddison and Carolyn Johnson;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House applaud the recognition bestowed upon such a valued component of the health system of the Town of Springhill and thank those individuals for their caring service.

Whereas the government introduced a bill last week that formally recognized the valuable work that volunteer firefighters and the fire services do in our communities; and
Whereas the Municipality of Cumberland County recently presented plaques of recognition to the volunteer fire departments in the area; and
Whereas on hand to accept the awards were John Reid, Chief of the Joggins Volunteer Fire Department; Darrell Fagan, First Deputy in Joggins; Haggie Eagles, President of the Ladies Auxiliary; Kelley Theal, Chief of the River Hebert Volunteer Fire Department; and George Rector, First Deputy in River Hebert;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House congratulate the volunteer fire departments in Cumberland County on the receipt of their awards and thank them for their commitment to keeping their community safe.
