Whereas daffodils are the harbingers of spring and a beautiful symbol of new hope; and
Whereas the daffodil has also become a symbol of the war on cancer and bunches are sold by Cancer Society volunteers to support cancer research and programs; and
Whereas April has been designated as Cancer Awareness Month and thus the time of the fundraising campaign, Daffodil Days;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House recognize April as Cancer Awareness Month and support the Cancer Society during Daffodil Days as it works to eradicate cancer.

Whereas April 6th has been declared Tartan Day in honour of the many Scottish settlers who arrived in Nova Scotia and at various locations in Canada and is a day of great significance to Scots since the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320; and
Whereas people from Scotland and their descendants have played an important role in the cultural, economic and political life of the province along with people of many other backgrounds and origins; and
Whereas the Federation of Scottish Clans in Nova Scotia is working very hard to promote the recognition of this day;
Therefore be it resolved that members of this House join me in congratulating the federation on its efforts and recognizing Tartan Day again this year.

Whereas Nova Scotia's 27 community learning networks offer more than 100 literacy and numeracy programs that are helping 2,000 Nova Scotians learn to read and write each year; and
Whereas these networks are supported by more than 600 volunteers who perform many vital functions, from tutoring to sitting on boards of directors; and
Whereas this, the International Year of the Volunteer, the Department of Education is establishing the first annual Community Literacy Volunteer Awards to recognize the important contribution of these volunteers;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House acknowledge the commitment and dedication of Nova Scotia volunteers who help adults in their communities to improve their literacy skills and further Nova Scotia's social and economic prosperity.

Whereas the unique coastal communities along the coast from Terence Bay, Lower Prospect, Sandy Cove, Prospect Village, McGraths Cove, Bayside, Shad Bay, Blind Bay to East and West Dover also deserve promotion;
Therefore be it resolved that the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Tourism and Culture instruct their staff to feature other destinations along the Prospect Road on the way to Peggys Cove.

Whereas this season's provincial championship series was decided in double overtime of game seven, and Danny White, a product of the Antigonish Minor Hockey Association, scored the winning goal to give the championship series to the Antigonish Junior A Bulldogs; and
Whereas both teams played their hearts out;
Therefore be it resolved that this House extend its congratulations to both teams and wish the Antigonish Junior A Bulldogs every success as they go on to their next series against Summerside, and that we support their efforts to become Maritime Junior A hockey champions.

Whereas the school boards have said they need an additional $35 million to maintain the status quo; and
Whereas the Department of Education received over $13 million in this budget even though it does not have a long-term funding plan;
Therefore be it resolved that the Department of Education reveal its long-term funding plan so Nova Scotians will know that this money is being allocated responsibly.

Whereas Blomidon Farms, Cosman and Whidden Honey, Delhaven Free Range Poultry Farm, Johnston's Cranberry Marsh, Kings Produce, Longspell Point Farm, Noggins Corner Farm, Valley Mushroom Company, and Webster Farms, which collectively formed the Annapolis Valley Farmers Co-op, launched an innovative on-line farmers markets last December; and
Whereas the Annapolis Valley Farmers Co-op's on-line service is the first of its kind in North America, delivering high-quality produce such as fruits, vegetables, free range turkeys, breads and pastries, using a highly personalized and friendly service via cutting-edge technology;

Whereas the recent budget underestimated revenue by at least $100 million, including the estimated $20 million in revenue from higher tobacco taxes; and
Whereas the underestimated revenue has been used to justify more broken promises and mean-spirited measures by this government; and
Whereas these include the $50 fine for patients waiting for long-term care beds, cancellation of the children's allowance, paltry relief on home heating fuel, and a host of new taxes for the farm community;
Therefore be it resolved that this House urge the Finance Minister to table an honest estimate of revenue and withdraw the most offensive and unfair measures in his latest budget.

Whereas the Minister of Environment and Labour advised all members of the House of Assembly that financial details of an agreement between the Province of Nova Scotia and Meadowview Property Owners Society were subject to a confidentiality clause; and
Whereas in an effort to distance himself from this unsavoury and politically motivated deal the Minister of Environment and Labour released financial details, breaching this confidentiality clause without the knowledge or consent of residents of the Meadowview Property Owners Society; and
Whereas such an action is reflective of how this minister can be trusted on confidential matters;
Therefore be it resolved that the Minister of Environment and Labour either table the entire agreement by the consent of both parties to this agreement or apologize to the people of Nova Scotia for his demonstrated lack of trust, as per his oath of office.

Whereas yesterday the four industry-labour co-chairs of the National Shipbuilding and Industrial Marine Partnership Project released their report containing more than 30 recommendations to revitalize Canada's shipbuilding industry; and
Whereas the report calls upon the industry to present a comprehensive plan to federal and provincial governments on the role governments can play in optimizing economic benefits to the shipbuilding industry; and
Whereas the report prescribes a means to maximize employment in the ailing industry which is of such vital importance to the Nova Scotia economy;
Therefore be it resolved that this House call upon the federal government to adopt and act upon the recommendations in this report.

Whereas the organizers, coaches and thousands of volunteers are providing an excellent opportunity for outstanding competition for these young hockey players;
Therefore be it resolved that this House congratulate the organizers and thousands of volunteers for staging this outstanding tournament, one of the largest in Canada, and welcomes and wishes success to all the teams in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Whereas this program will enable emergency personnel to quickly access vital information on members of a household during a medical emergency; and
Whereas this program is an excellent example of a valuable partnership that will work towards the safety and protection of residents, in particular seniors;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of the House of Assembly congratulate and thank Constable George of the Ingonish Beach RCMP Detachment and the many volunteers who have and will continue to work on making this worthwhile program a success.
