An Act Respecting a Memorial Day
to Honour First Responders

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the First Responders Day Act.

2 In this Act,

(a) "first responder" means a volunteer or professional who, during the early stages of an emergency, is responsible for the protection and preservation of life, property, evidence and the environment, and includes a police officer, a firefighter, military personnel, an auxiliary coast guard member, a ground search and rescue volunteer, a medical evacuation pilot, a dispatcher, a paramedic, a nurse, a physician, a mental health provider, an emergency manager, a tow truck driver and such other volunteers or professionals the regulations prescribe;

(b) "Minister" means the member of the Executive Council charged with the responsibility for this Act.

3 (1) The Minister may make regulations prescribing volunteers or professionals as first responders for the purpose of this Act.

(2) The exercise by the Minister of the authority contained in subsection (1) is a regulation within the meaning of the Regulations Act.

4 Throughout the Province, in each and every year, May 1st shall be kept and observed under the name of First Responders Day.
