An Act to Establish a Cross-border
Emergency Ambulance Services Strategy
1 This Act may be cited as the Cross-border Emergency Ambulance Services Strategy Act.
2 (1) In this Act,(a) "border region" means the geographical region that encompasses Cumberland County in the Province and Westmorland County in New Brunswick;
(b) "emergency service provider" means any person or organization authorized to provide ambulance services, emergency health services or communication-centre services in the Province or in New Brunswick.
(2) Except as otherwise provided in this Act, words and expressions used in this Act have the same meaning as in the Emergency Health Services Act.
3 (1) The Minister of Health and Wellness, in collaboration with the Minister of Health for New Brunswick, shall develop a cross-border emergency ambulance services strategy.
(2) The strategy must ensure that(a) emergency service providers located in either the Province or in New Brunswick are authorized to operate in both provinces;
(b) emergency service providers can co-operate effectively with one another, irrespective of provincial borders;
(c) emergency service providers in the border region can respond quickly to emergencies on either side of the border; and
(d) people who live in the border region have timely access to emergency ambulance services.
4 (1) This Act comes into force on such day as the Governor in Council orders and declares by proclamation.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), this Act does not have effect until such day as substantially similar legislation comes into force in New Brunswick.
