Explanatory Note

This Bill

(a) provides that the Emergency Management Office is responsible for ensuring that emergency alerts are issued in appropriate cases by the appropriate authorities; and

(b) provides for the issuance of emergency alerts to Nova Scotians for emergencies in another province near the Nova Scotia border.

An Act to Amend Chapter 8
of the Acts of 1990,
the Emergency Management Act,
Respecting Emergency Alerts

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 8 of the Acts of 1990, the Emergency Management Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 12 the following Section:

    12A (1) When there is an emergency, the Emergency Management Office of the Department shall ensure that an emergency alert is issued in appropriate cases by the appropriate authorities.

    (2) Where there is an emergency alert is issued in another province of Canada within two hundred and fifty kilometres, or such greater distance as may be prescribed in the regulations, of the Province, the Emergency Management Office shall ensure that an emergency alert is issued by appropriate authorities to persons in the Province affected by the emergency.

2 Subsection 25(1) of Chapter 8, as amended by Chapter 48 of the Acts of 2005, Chapter 12 of the Acts of 2009 and Chapter 9 of the Acts of 2011, is further amended by adding immediately after clause (g) the following clause:

    (ga) respecting emergency alerts;
