An Act to Strengthen and Protect
the Chignecto Isthmus—
A Key Section of the Atlantic Gateway
1 This Act may be cited as the Chignecto Isthmus Act.
2 (1) The Government shall establish a Chignecto Isthmus task force.
(2) The task force established under subsection (1) must include(a) the Minister of Public Works;
(b) the Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure for New Brunswick;
(c) the members of the House of Assembly, the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick and the House of Commons whose constituencies include the Chignecto Isthmus;
(d) representatives from Indigenous communities in or near the Chignecto Isthmus; and
(e) representatives from industry and business who have expertise on infrastructure, agriculture and transportation matters affecting the communities in or near the Chignecto Isthmus.
3 The mandate of the task force must be to ensure that collaborative measures are taken to properly identify and remedy issues in the Chignecto Isthmus, including respecting infrastructure needs, climate change, storm and emergency preparedness, safe travel and the transportation of goods.
4 Subject to Section 5, the Government shall provide funding necessary to maintain or strengthen infrastructure in the Chignecto Isthmus, including funding to improve highways, rail lines and dikes.
5 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
6 (1) This Act comes into force on such day as the Governor in Council orders and declares by proclamation.
(2) Notwithstanding subsection (1), this Act does not have effect until such day as substantially similar legislation comes into force in New Brunswick and federally.
