An Act to Provide Accountability
for Sustainable Forest Practices

WHEREAS Professor William Lahey’s report on sustainable forest practices, “An Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia”, was released in 2018;

AND WHEREAS the report included a number of recommendations on forest practices to protect ecosystems and biodiversity, balanced with social and economic objectives;

AND WHEREAS in December 2018 the Government accepted the report’s recommendations and began their implementation;

AND WHEREAS the Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables has been tasked with implementing the remaining recommendations contained in the report;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Sustainable Forest Practices Accountability Act.

2 In this Act, “Minister” means the Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables.

3 (1) The Minister shall report annually to the House of Assembly on the progress made towards implementing the recommendations contained in Professor William Lahey’s Independent Review of Forest Practices in Nova Scotia report.

(2) The Minister shall table the annual report referred to in subsection (1) in the House of Assembly on or before December 31st of the year in which it was completed or, where the House is not then sitting, file it with the Clerk of the House.
