An Act to Assist Families With
Child Care Costs Related to COVID-19

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the COVID-19 Child Care Costs Act.

2 In this Act,

(a) "child" means a person under the age of 12 years;

(b) "Minister" means the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board;

(c) "parent" means the person who received the Canada Child Benefit for a child during the year 2020;

(d) "school closure" means the cancellation of classes during the regular school year due to COVID-19, but does not include cancellations during mandatory holidays and vacation days published in the annual school calendar by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development;

(e) "week" means more than three full weekdays in one seven-day period.

3 Subject to Section 5, the Minister shall pay the sum of $200 to the parent of a child before April 1, 2022.

4 Subject to Section 5, commencing April 1, 2021, the Minister shall pay the sum of $50 per child per week to the parent of a child during a school closure that lasts longer than one week.

5 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
