BILL NO. 64
2nd Session, 63rd General Assembly
67 Elizabeth II, 2018
Private Member's Bill
Motor Vehicle Act
The Honourable Pat Dunn
First Reading: September 26, 2018
This Bill requires Service Nova Scotia to include in the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook instructions for the driver or a passenger of a vehicle to open the door of the vehicle with the hand furthest from the door handle. This is known as a "Dutch Reach" and is intended to encourage the driver or passenger to turn their bodies towards the door, making it more likely that incoming cyclists would be spotted.
1 Chapter 293 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Motor Vehicle Act, is amended by adding immediately before Section 301 the following Section:
- 300C Service Nova Scotia shall include in the Nova Scotia Driver's Handbook information advising the driver or a passenger in a parked vehicle to open the door of the vehicle with the hand furthest from the handle of the door in order to better spot incoming cyclists.
