Truth and Reconciliation Commitment Act

First Reading: October 21, 2016
WHEREAS the Final Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, "Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future", was issued in 2015;
AND WHEREAS the Report included Calls to Action based on the Commission's examination of the residential school system for Aboriginal children and its finding that the system "was an education system in name only for much of its existence";
AND WHEREAS reconciliation is an ongoing process of establishing and maintaining respectful relationships that must be embraced by governments at all levels, and that relies on education as an important component of the process;
THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:1 This Act may be cited as the Truth and Reconciliation Commitment Act. 2 The Province is committed to implementing the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada as set out in the Commission's Final Report, "Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future".
