An Act to Establish a Program
for the Control of Coyotes
in Nova Scotia

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Coyote Control Act .

2 In this Act, "Minister" means the Minister of Agriculture.

3 Where there is a conflict between this Act or the regulations and any other enactment, this Act and the regulations prevail.

4 (1) The Minister shall establish a program to control the coyote population in the Province.

(2) Subject to Section 6, the program may include

(a) a bounty for the killing of a coyote;

(b) assistance for the acquisition of dogs to guard livestock from predators; and

(c) assistance for the construction of fencing to protect livestock from predators.

5 (1) The Minister may make regulations

(a) authorizing the killing of coyotes otherwise than permitted pursuant to the Wildlife Act;

(b) prescribing the times when, the areas where, the circumstances under which and the methods by which coyotes may be killed;

(c) prescribing a bounty for the killing of a coyote and the eligibility for entitlement to the bounty;

(d) respecting the application for and the payment of the bounty;

(e) respecting the application for and prescribing the amount of assistance payable and the eligibility for the assistance for the acquisition of guard dogs;

(f) respecting the application for and prescribing the amount of assistance payable and the eligibility for the assistance for the construction of livestock fencing;

(g) establishing pilot programs respecting the control of coyotes;

(h) prescribing forms for the purpose of this Act;

(i) respecting any other matter or thing that the Minister considers necessary or advisable to carry out effectively the intent and purpose of this Act.

(2) The exercise by the Minister of the authority contained in subsection (1) is regulations within the meaning of the Regulations Act.

6 The sums required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of moneys appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
