Explanatory Note

This Bill provides that a medical student is not required to begin repayment of a student loan until six months following completion of his or her residency program.

An Act to Assist in the Retention
of Doctors in Nova Scotia

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Section 2 of Chapter 449 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Student Aid Act, is amended by adding immediately after clause (c) the following clause:

(ca) "medical student" means a student enrolled in a course of studies in medicine;

2 Chapter 449 is further amended by adding immediately after Section 6 the following Section:

6A A medical student is not required to begin repayment of a loan issued under this Act until at least six months following the completion of any required residency program that follows the completion of the medical student's academic studies.

3 Section 11 of Chapter 449 is amended by adding immediately after clause (g) the following clause:

(ga) prescribing such additional measures as may be necessary to give effect to Section 6A;
