Explanatory Note
This Bill increases the maximum leave to which an employee is entitled upon the birth or adoption of a child to 52 weeks. At present an employee is entitled to a maximum of 34 weeks on the birth of a child and 17 weeks on the adoption of a child.
An Act to Amend Chapter 246
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Labour Standards Code
Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:
1 (1) Subsection 59B(1) of Chapter 246 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Labour Standards Code, as enacted by Chapter 14 of the Acts of 1991, is amended by striking out "up to seventeen" in the fourth and fifth last lines and substituting ", subject to subsection (4), up to fifty-two".
(2) Clause 59B(2)(b) of Chapter 246, as enacted by Chapter 14, is amended by striking out "seventeen" in the first and second lines and substituting "thirty-five".
(3) Clause 59B(3)(b) of Chapter 246, as enacted by Chapter 14, is repealed and the following clause substituted:
(b) ends not later than fifty-two weeks after the child or children first arrive in the employee's home,
(4) Section 59B of Chapter 246, as enacted by Chapter 14, is further amended by adding immediately after subsection (3) the following subsection:
2 This Act has effect on and after December 31, 2000.
