2025-03-25_1518_SR: Unparliamentary language

[page 1513]

HON. LEAH MARTIN: Thank you to the member opposite for the question. I've listened to a lot of - for lack of a better word - mansplaining from the member opposite over the last couple of hours and days. I would like to say that while Nova Scotians respect a government that can walk back on things that maybe they don't get perfectly, how come the member opposite didn't apologize when he didn't get it right yesterday, standing with the Ku Klux Klan? I'm not sure.

BRENDAN MAGUIRE: This misinformation or this storytelling about mass layoffs - when we come back in the Fall, and if the doom and gloom that they are predicting does not happen - which it won't - I hope those members stand on their feet and apologize.

THE SPEAKER: The honourable member for Halifax Citadel-Sable Island.

LISA LACHANCE: Point of order. I do request that the member withdraw the statement of "misinformation."

THE SPEAKER: He didn't accuse any member of misinformation.

2025-04-05_0933_SR: Decorum

CLAUDIA CHENDER: Yes, this government is getting national recognition. There are headlines in every national news outlet talking about the assault on democracy by this government. The Globe and MailThe Vassy Kapelos Show, CTV, Power and Politics - every single one of them has featured Bill No. 1 - Bill No. 1, which I have to say the members were curiously silent on last night. I didn't hear the (miming applause). I didn't hear it.

LISA LACHANCE: I'm rising on a point of order. Today during Question Period, the honourable Leader of the Official Opposition was, of course, reminded to speak through you and not make eye contact with others. Yet during debate, the Premier, the Minister of Finance and Treasury Board, the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development, and the Minister of Justice all responded making eye contact. I'd like to ask that rule to be applied equally.

2025-02-25_0441_SR: Veracity

PAUL WOZNEY: Point of order, Speaker, but is it parliamentary to suggest that someone has presented something that is not factual intentionally in the House?

THE SPEAKER: When you are making rulings on a point of order, it has to do with how they say something. In no way did that member say that the other member intentionally misled. He had stated misunderstood, may not have read it correctly, yada, yada, yada. I know you've been here for a long time now (laughs), but I trust in the decisions made by the Clerk and myself when it comes to things like that.

2025-02-21_0284_SR: Filming on the floor

LISA LACHANCE: I rise on a point of order. Yesterday, during proceedings and at the start at Estimates, while there was some discussion happening in this main Chamber about the plan for the day, the honourable Minister of Seniors and Long-term Care, the Deputy Premier, brought out her phone and filmed me in those Chambers while proceedings were under way. I was alerted to this by someone watching Legislative Television, so that action is recorded. I would ask for an apology from the Deputy Premier, and I would ask that that video be removed from her phone.

2025-02-19_0104_SR: Identify Rule

HON. BARBARA ADAMS: I rise on a point of order. During their reply to the Budget Address, the NDP House Leader referred to the independent country Ukraine as "the Ukraine," a title they had used before in this House.

For clarity, they said that together we have faced a COVID pandemic, supply chain challenges and inflation, conflict in the Ukraine, Gaza, and elsewhere, and now political and economic instability with the U.S.

2025-02-18_0083_SR: Supplementary application to Speaker

PAUL WOZNEY: A question for clarification: When raising unparliamentary language, my understanding is that you get to make your case once. Are we now in the habit of allowing people to make supplementary applications for unparliamentary behaviour? Is that a change to process in the House that we should all be aware of?
