RESOLUTION NO. 3255
HON. RONALD RUSSELL: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:

Whereas while all Canadians grieved over yesterday's news that four of our soldiers were killed and eight injured in Afghanistan, the fact that we now know that two of the dead are from Nova Scotia brings it closer to home; and
Whereas news that Nova Scotia lost two of its sons, Private Richard Green of Mill Cove and Private Nathan Smith of Ostrea Lake, has devastated those two communities, their families and friends; and
Whereas the praise for the character of these young men only serves to highlight the depths of the loss;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House send their praise and prayers to the loved ones of Private Smith and Private Green who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending our country.

RESOLUTION NO. 3256
MR. DARRELL DEXTER: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Nova Scotians share the grief that has touched homes in our province with news that Private Richard Green of Mill Cove and Private Nathan Smith of Ostrea Lake were among the Canadian soldiers killed in a tragic accident in Afghanistan this week; and
Whereas these young men exemplified the dedication to serving our nation, which is among the finest attributes of the people of Nova Scotia; and
Whereas their native province can only offer consolation, honour and respect to the families and friends of Private Nathan Smith and Private Richard Green;
Therefore be it resolved that this House join in expressing its deepest sorrow to those who have suffered such a terrible loss with the deaths, in action, of Private Richard Green
and Private Nathan Smith.

MR. WAYNE GAUDET: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Private Nathan Smith of Ostrea Lake was tragically killed while serving his country in Afghanistan; and
Whereas Private Smith was a member of the 3rd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry battle group taking part in the international war on terrorism; and
Whereas Private Smith was among thousands of soldiers who have volunteered to defend our country;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House extend their deepest sympathies to Private Nathan Smith's family and friends on the occurrence of this most tragic incident.

MR. DONALD DOWNE: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Nova Scotians are saddened and shocked to read of the tragic death of Private Richard Green while serving his country in Afghanistan; and
Whereas Private Richard Green of Mill Cove, Lunenburg County served the military with honour and pride as a paratrooper with the Edmonton-based Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry; and
Whereas the death of Private Green brings home to all Nova Scotians the sad realities of war;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House extend their thoughts and prayers to Private Green's family and friends at this most difficult time.

RESOLUTION NO. 3259
MR. FRANK CORBETT: Mr. Speaker, on behalf of the member for Halifax Needham, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the support services provided by women's centres and men's intervention programs are sorely needed to provide assistance to women and for counselling the perpetrators and victims of family violence; and
Whereas Nova Scotians owe much to these front-line workers who year after year provide excellent care and support for families; and
Whereas one of those front-line workers is Rhonda Haines-Richards, as centre support with one year of service at the Second Story Women's Centre in Bridgewater;
Therefore be it resolved that this House applaud Rhonda Haines-Richards, as centre support at Second Story Women's Centre in Bridgewater, for the care and support she provides to families.

RESOLUTION NO. 3260
MR. GRAHAM STEELE: Mr. Speaker, I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the Conservative Government said it was creating an all-powerful Treasury and Policy Board that can interfere in the decisions of community and volunteer groups because it must ensure public funds are spent well; and
Whereas on April 18th, the Chairman of the Treasury and Policy Board defended the $93,000 paid for an outside consultant by explaining that the consultant was able to open doors to retired Conservative politicians, Peter Lougheed and John Crosbie; and
Whereas most Nova Scotians would have thought that a Conservative Premier did not need to pay $1,050 a day for a consultant to open the door to fellow Conservatives;
Therefore be it resolved that the Hamm Government should seek financial management advice from the many community volunteer agencies of this province who really know how to get maximum value from every dollar entrusted to them.

RESOLUTION NO. 3261

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas in February 1999 the membership of the Islands Development Association launched a monthly publication titled Passages as a vehicle to improve communication on Long and Brier Islands; and
Whereas included in the pages of this publication are articles of interest to all ages, including current events, Royal Canadian Legion proceedings and Honour Roll, community happenings, church news, school activities, conservation issues and interviews with elder citizens to record their memories of their home communities in years past thus preserving the facet of local history; and
Whereas this publication has a circulation of well over 600 and is distributed at cost to the communities of Digby Neck and Islands and by subscription all over North America;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House applaud this dedicated group of volunteers for their contribution to the cultural mosaic of Digby County.
RESOLUTION NO. 3262

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Trevor Andrew of Falmouth, Nova Scotia, was called to be part of the Canadian Olympic snowboarding team only a few days prior to the event in Salt Lake City; and
Whereas this former world and Canadian snowboarding champion arrived a mere three days before the competition commenced and had only a fraction of time to prepare for the event; and
Whereas Mr. Andrew made it through the qualifying rounds to reach the halfpipe final where he proceeded to achieve ninth standing overall;
Therefore be it resolved that this House congratulate Mr. Andrew for his outstanding representation of his country and province and for making the top 10 in Olympic snowboarding.
RESOLUTION NO. 3263

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas Stephen Clyke of Truro was named the outstanding male athlete 15 years and under at the Truro Sport Heritage Society's 18th Annual Awards Dinner; and
Whereas Stephen's main sport is baseball and as a Bantam "A" player in 2001 he won MVP awards in provincial, Maritime and national competitions; and
Whereas Stephen is an Honours With Distinction student at Truro Junior High School and also excels in instrumental music;
Therefore be it resolved that all members congratulate Stephen Clyke on being named the Sport Heritage Society's 2002 outstanding male athlete 15 and under and wish him well in all his future activities.
RESOLUTION NO. 3264

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas on April 12, 2002 Raymond Thurber of Freeport, Long Island, celebrated his 80th birthday; and
Whereas the community joined with his wife, children and grandchildren on April 13th at the Freeport United Baptist Church to commemorate this momentous occasion; and
Whereas Mr. Thurber, who had wartime service in the Royal Canadian Armed Forces and since his retirement from the fishery, has been an active participant in the community;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House extend to Mr. Thurber their sincere best wishes for a happy and healthy 80th year.
RESOLUTION NO. 3265

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas on May 5th the HMCS/CFB Cornwallis Military Historical Association will be holding a ceremony to commemorate the Battle of the Atlantic which began on September 3, 1939, with the sinking of the Montreal-bound passenger ship SS Athenia by a German submarine west of Ireland; and
Whereas the Royal Canadian Navy began the war with 13 vessels and 3,500 personnel, had at war's end the third largest navy in the world with 373 fighting ships and over 110,000 members, all of whom were volunteers, including 6,500 women who served in the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Services. Approximately 2,000 members of the RCN died during the war and 24 RCN vessels were sunk. However, these Canadian ships and their aircraft, alone or in consort with other ships or aircraft, sank 50 U-boats; and
Whereas Canada, which had only 38 ocean-going merchant vessels of 1,000 tons or more when the war began, built 410 merchant ships during the war which made more than 25,000 merchant ship voyages. The Merchant Navy Book of Remembrance lists the names of approximately 1,600 Canadians who died at sea during the war, including those of eight women;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House pay solemn tribute to the courageous Canadians who joined with the Allies during the Second World War to fight - and win - the Battle of the Atlantic against tremendous odds in the face of a determined foe and harsh elements.
RESOLUTION NO. 3266

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the annual conference of the South Eastern Massachusetts Atlantic Canada Association is being hosted by the Town of Yarmouth this summer from July 24th to July 26th; and
Whereas the event is a gathering of municipal leaders from southeastern Massachusetts and Atlantic Canada, and will mark the first time the event has been held in southwestern Nova Scotia; and
Whereas event organizers are presently finalizing details of the conference which may include the addition of a trade exchange;
Therefore be it resolved that MLAs applaud the efforts of the organizers, including the South West Shore Development Authority, as they prepare to host an outstanding conference.
RESOLUTION NO. 3267

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas volunteers are of vital importance to all of our communities; and
Whereas the Ferdinand family of Truro, comprised of Cheryl, David and Joshua, will be presented with the Sobey's Family Volunteer Award at the Provincial Volunteer Award Ceremony and Luncheon Day April 19th; and
Whereas the Sobey's Family Volunteer Award is presented annually to a family that has made outstanding contributions as volunteers and has demonstrated outstanding and consistent caring for the improvement of the community around them;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House commend the Ferdinand family for all of their hard work and congratulate them for this well-deserved recognition.
RESOLUTION NO. 3268

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas volunteers are of vital importance to all of our communities; and
Whereas the community of Spryfield will be presented with the Model Volunteer Community Award at the Provincial Volunteer Award Ceremony and Luncheon Day April 19th; and
Whereas the Model Volunteer Community Award is presented annually to a community that has shown ongoing support for volunteers that work together as a community on a project or projects to enhance the lives of its members to make their community a better place in which to live;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House commend the community of Spryfield, its residents and volunteers and its representative, Peggy Allen, for all of their hard work and congratulate them for this well-deserved recognition.
RESOLUTION NO. 3269

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas volunteers are the cornerstone of Nova Scotia's strong towns and villages because of their selfless dedication to others; and
Whereas the 2002 Provincial Representative Volunteer Awards will be presented at the Provincial Volunteer Award Ceremony and Luncheon on April 19th at the Westin Hotel to pay tribute to Nova Scotians who show their commitment to their community by donating their time and skills in so many different ways to others; and
Whereas Alma Russell, representing the Halifax Regional Municipality, will be named as a Provincial Representative Volunteer;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House congratulate Alma Russell on being named Halifax Regional Municipality Volunteer of the Year and thank her for all she does for others in her community.
RESOLUTION NO. 3270

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas volunteers are of vital importance to all of our communities; and
Whereas Erin O'Prey of Lower Sackville will be presented with the Volunteer Youth Award at the Provincial Volunteer Award Ceremony and Luncheon Day April 19th; and
Whereas the Volunteer Youth Award is presented annually to a junior or senior high school student who has volunteered in both the school and community making a significant contribution;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House commend Erin O'Prey for all of the hard work and dedication that led to this well-deserved recognition.
RESOLUTION NO. 3271

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas volunteers are of vital importance to all of our communities; and
Whereas Gordon Wood has been selected by the Municipality of the District of Argyle as its Volunteer of the Year for his long-standing and unselfish commitment to his community as a volunteer in many capacities, as a councillor in municipal government and also as warden; and
Whereas the 2002 Provincial Volunteer Awards will be presented to individuals from across Nova Scotia at the Provincial Volunteer Award Ceremony and Luncheon on April 19th at the Westin Hotel to pay tribute to the thousands of Nova Scotians whose generosity and compassion help to create a better future for us all;
Therefore be it resolved that this House extend its congratulations to Gordon Wood for being named a Provincial Representative Volunteer for 2002 and offer thanks to Mr. Wood and volunteers across the province for their continued hard work and dedication.

Whereas the 22nd Annual Women's Recognition Luncheon, honouring women who, through selflessness and determination, have touched the hearts of many, will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel starting at 11:30 a.m.; and
Whereas all proceeds from the luncheon go to support the YWCA family and child-care programs, wellness centre and women's accommodations; and
Whereas Gina Young will be one of approximately a dozen women who will be honoured at the luncheon for her volunteer work with a wide variety of community organizations, including her extensive involvement in the Halifax Block Parent program;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House congratulate Gina Young on her recognition for her significant contributions.

Whereas the 22nd Annual Women's Recognition Luncheon, honouring women who, through selflessness and determination, have touched the hearts of many, will be held on Thursday, April 18, 2002, at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel starting at 11:30 a.m.; and
Whereas all proceeds from the luncheon go to support the YWCA family and child-care programs, wellness centre and women's accommodations; and
Whereas Diana Wibberley will be one of approximately a dozen women who will be honoured at the luncheon for her volunteer work with a wide variety of community organizations, including her work with the Terry Fox Foundation, the Taiso Gymnastic Club, Nova Scotia Gymnastics Association, Greater Sackville Ball League, Halifax-Dartmouth Junior Achievement, United Way and the Sackville High School girls volleyball team;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House congratulate Diana Wibberley on her recognition for her significant contributions.

RESOLUTION NO. 3282

I hereby give notice that on a future day I shall move the adoption of the following resolution:
Whereas the Blueberry Capital of the World, the Town of Oxford, is turning 98 years old today, having been incorporated as a town on this date in 1904; and
Whereas Oxford was first discovered more than 200 years ago when transportation was reliant upon the waterways, the Black River, River Phillip and Little River, which are still used today for canoeing, as well as what is described as the best trout and salmon fishing anywhere in Nova Scotia; and
Whereas history is an important component of the Town of Oxford's heritage, no better example exists than the publishing of the Oxford Journal which has been owned by three generations of the Marchant family and has been producing a weekly paper for the past 104 years;
Therefore be it resolved that MLAs extend a happy 98th birthday to residents of the Town of Oxford today and wish them continued success, especially as they prepare for their centennial celebrations two years from now.
