Explanatory Note
This Bill removes court houses from the list of property in the Assessment Act not liable to municipal taxation and amends the Municipal Grants Act to phase in a grant in lieu of taxes for court houses.
An Act to Amend Chapter 23
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Assessment Act,
and Chapter 302
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Municipal Grants Act
1 Clause 5(1)(e) of Chapter 23 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Assessment Act, is amended by striking out "court house," in the second line.
2 Section 4 of Chapter 302 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Municipal Grants Act, as amended by Chapter 39 of the Acts of 1990, Chapter 15 of the Acts of 1991, Chapter 25 of the Acts of 1992, Chapter 33 of the Acts of 1993, Chapter 27 of the Acts of 1994, Chapter 7 of the Acts of 1994-95, Chapter 9 of the Acts of 2003, Chapter 6 of the Acts of 2005 and Chapter 21 of the Acts of 2007, is further amended by adding immediately after subsection (1) the following subsection:
(a) in the municipal taxation year 2009-10, ten per cent of the amount payable pursuant to subsection (1);
(b) in the municipal taxation year 2010-11, fifty percent of the amount payable pursuant to subsection (1); and
(c) in the municipal taxation year 2011-12 and subsequent municipal taxation years, the amount payable pursuant to subsection (1).
3 This Act comes into force on such day as the Governor in Council orders and declares by proclamation.
