2024-09-18_9296_SR: Tabling documents

THE SPEAKER: Order. The time allotted for Oral Questions Put by Members to Ministers has expired.

The member for Cape Breton Centre-Whitney Pier, during Question Period tabled documents that were unattributed letters and e-mails. You are not allowed to table documents that are unattributed to anyone. You can re-table these in the future if you'd like to, but you cannot redact the information. We'll return the tabled documents, and we will ask the member to retract the quotes from Question Period.

KENDRA COOMBES: Speaker, on Friday, the Minister of Community Services asked me to table some documents. This comes from a DCS worker from Eastern Passage: "Good afternoon, Kendra. I watched the Legislature and heard what the minister said to you. Well, I for one am sending you this email that I can't count the ways . . ."

THE SPEAKER: Order. I ask you not to read the document. I ask you just to table it.

The honourable member for Cape Breton Centre-Whitney Pier.

2024-09-18_9255_SS: Apparel

THE SPEAKER: Order, please. It is quite hot in here today and we do have a dress code, but due to the heat, we've decided to allow members to take their jackets off if needed. (Applause) That's the biggest clap I've had since I sat here. I'll do that again on a later date.

2024-09-17_9230_SS: Comments eliciting reaction

HON. ZACH CHURCHILL: Just put that into perspective. The minister stands up and says: Look, I got one email about someone who is paying less for heat in public housing while homelessness has tripled, while housing costs have shot up more here than anywhere else in the country, and where this government is bringing in more people than we have homes to accommodate. That's what this minister is focused on? An email?

2024-09-17_9243_SR: Comments eliciting response

HON. BEN JESSOME: Speaker, during Question Period, the Premier made comments to me after I made my questions, saying that I would not have to worry about the next fire. If that is not what he said, then he should stand in his place and clarify what he said. Under the rules - that it elicited a reaction from this side of the House. It definitely elicits a reaction from this side of the House.

2024-09-17_9242_SR: Tabling quoted documents

HON. ZACH CHURCHILL: Speaker, I want to bring your attention to documents that were presented by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. They were presented in the House as quotations. However, the documents themselves are not presented as quotations. They are presented as briefing note bullets. The words are not attributed to any individuals.

2024-09-13_9186_SS:

ELIZABETH SMITH-MCCROSSIN: Speaker, I'd like to rise on a point of order. Twice during Question Period, the Minister of Health and Wellness questioned my code of ethics. That is questioning my integrity. I should be able to stand in this House and ask a question, a medical question, for the people and on behalf of the people of this province, without having my character defamed.

2024-09-13_9183_SS: Response in QP

ELIZABETH SMITH-MCCROSSIN: If strep A is on the rise, why would you not put that rapid test, where you could have the results in 45 minutes - now doctors do not get the results for 72 hours, and then sometimes people don't have a family doctor and the person goes undiagnosed. People are dying in this province, possibly unnecessarily. I think it's a valid question to ask: Does a lawyer have the ability to lead our health care system?

MICHELLE THOMPSON: I've worked with a number of health care . . .

2024-09-13_9166_SS: Quiet and respect

THE SPEAKER: Order. I don't know if anybody noticed the look that was given to me by the member for Cole Harbour-Dartmouth, but over there, it's been very loud, and it's disrespectful to the person who is speaking. When you're speaking, I hope others do the same. Please, I ask that everyone keep to a whisper to respect the person who is speaking.
