Explanatory Note

This Bill provides for the appointment each year of an additional member of the Order of Nova Scotia who must be under 26 years of age and whose distinguishing accomplishments were achieved while he or she was 16 to 25 years of age.

An Act to Amend Chapter 9
of the Acts of 2001,
the Order of Nova Scotia Act

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 (1) Subsection 16(4) of Chapter 9 of the Acts of 2001, the Order of Nova Scotia Act, is amended by

(a) striking out "Each" in the first line and substituting "Subject to subsection (4A), each"; and

(b) striking out "five" in the second line and substituting "six".

(2) Section 16 of Chapter 9 is further amended by adding immediately after subsection (4) the following subsections:

(4A) In any year in which the Advisory Council selects six candidates, one of the candidates must be a person under the age of twenty-six years who is selected for having distinguished himself or herself as set forth in Section 5 while being at least the age of sixteen years and under the age of twenty-five years.

(4B) Nothing in subsection (4A) precludes the selection of a person described in subsection (4A) if fewer than six candidates are selected.
