MR. DAVID WILSON: Mr. Speaker, I beg leave to table a petition addressed to the Minister of Education. It reads, we the undersigned and members of CUPE Local 5050, strongly object to the support staff cuts proposed by the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board. We demand that you, as Minister of Education for this province, restore the funding necessary to maintain the services provided for our children. The petition contains 497 names and I have affixed my signature to it as well.

BROOKE TAYLOR: Mr. Speaker, I beg leave to table a petition whereby the prayer reads, "To: Whom it may concern at Canada Post We the undersigned residents of Canada & South Roads on R R #2 Middle Musquodoboit B0N 1X0 are requesting approval to move our mail boxes, from their current place, . . . along RR #2 . . . This request is being made due to repeated vandalism in their current location. Some of the 10 mail boxes have been destroyed or damaged up to 6 times in the past 24 months. Several reportings to the R.C.M.P. have been made. However so far they never responded to any calls. The changes we request would result in approximately a 4.5 km increase in the mileage of the entire route." I have signed the petition.

Whereas this nameless soldier represented the sacrifices of countless young Canadians who lost their lives to protect peace and freedom; and
Whereas the soil of every province and territory, including Nova Scotia, were placed in the tomb of the unknown soldier to ensure he will lie forever in the soil of his homeland;
Therefore be it resolved that in commemoration of the unknown soldier, members of this House thank all war veterans, living and dead, known and unknown, for sacrificing so much for the benefit of countless generations.

Whereas the additions for Halterm's main berth, Pier C, will give Halterm the ability to offer customers faster loading and unloading; and
Whereas the two post-Panamax cranes will importantly also give the Port of Halifax the ability to solicit work on post-Panamax ships:
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House recognize the significance of the arrival of the new cranes for Halterm and for the post-Panamax business they will draw on our vital seaway connection, the Port of Halifax.

Whereas hockey fans will never again see the talent, energy and determination of the kind demonstrated by Rocket Richard during his 18 year NHL career;
Therefore be it resolved that members of this House, on behalf of the people of Nova Scotia, convey our deepest condolences to the Richard family for their loss, and hope that family members take some comfort from the thoughts and prayers expressed by millions of Canadians in memory of Maurice Richard.

Whereas this soldier will symbolize 27,000 comrades who have no known graves; and
Whereas this unknown soldier laid in state in the Hall of Honour, on Parliament Hill, for two days before he was buried, with full military honours, on Sunday;
Therefore be it resolved that this House remember the sacrifice given to us by so many young men and women who went off to war and lost their lives so that we could have the quality of life we enjoy today.

Whereas Nova Scotia has been designated a cancer hot spot, with this country's highest cancer mortality rate, which is expected to continue to rise; and
Whereas the cancer mortality rate in this province has risen 40 per cent between 1970 and 1995, while other mortality causes have stayed level; and
Whereas this distinction has raised concerns about cancer treatment, access to specialists, staff shortages and burnout;
Therefore be it resolved that the government anticipate an even more significant rise in cancer mortality rates in this province, given the recent gutting of health care by the Tories.

Whereas the Rocket was not just a hero on the ice but also off the ice, where he tirelessly promoted the game he loved;
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House remember the great contributions of Maurice "the Rocket" Richard, both on and off the ice.

Whereas Halifax Mooseheads defeated both the Ontario Hockey League champions and the Western Hockey League champions to secure a semi-final berth in the 2000 Memorial Cup Playoffs this past week; and

Whereas after these hard-won victories and performances which electrified the thousands of fans who gathered at the Metro Centre, the Mooseheads ultimately fell just short of the Cup; and
Whereas the Mooseheads assistant captain and crowd favourite Brandon Reid was quoted in The Sunday Daily News as saying, "I wanted to make sure the fans knew I left my heart on the ice for them";
Therefore be it resolved that all members of this House stand and applaud the players, the coaching staff, the entire Mooseheads organization, and the Memorial Cup 2000 Planning Committee for an effort they ought to be proud of.

Whereas Halifax has fallen from third to eleventh in Maclean's second annual ranking of health care services; and
Whereas once again the Minister of Health's comments indicate he is unaware and unconcerned about this decline in ranking; and
Whereas health care and public education are key components to make a community one where people want to live, work and raise a family;
Therefore be it resolved that the Premier should recognize that his priority should be such fundamentals of life in Nova Scotia as the quality of health care and public education.

Whereas the Museum of Industry, River John's Coastal Spirit Expeditions, the New Glasgow Riverfront Music Jubilee, and long-time CKEC Radio host Rod Mackie were all presented with gifts, marking their contribution to tourism in Pictou County;
Therefore be it resolved that this House of Assembly, through this resolution, extend our sincere congratulations to the Pictou County Tourist Association and wish them even more success in 2000 and in future years.

Whereas 1st Edition will be cut to one half hour beginning in October, 2000;
Therefore be it resolved that this House unanimously oppose this reduction and request the Minister of Heritage move to retain the full one hour status.

Whereas secretaries in the Department of Community Services are expected to make do with office space of 68 square feet while the Minister and Deputy Minister will occasionally use their 80 square foot washrooms; and
Whereas like Premiers John Savage and John Buchanan, the Minister of Community Services has decided he requires a lavish lavatory instead of livable allowances to social welfare recipients.
Therefore be it resolved this House recommend to the Minister of Community Services to forget about his palatial potty and use a public washroom like the rest of his staff.

Whereas Valley Drug Mart has been serving the prescription needs and pharmaceutical services to the Middleton area and eastern Annapolis County residents for the past 26 years, the past 10 under the ownership of Robert Perry, Cathryn Spurrell and Sandra Penney; and
Whereas employees and customers of Valley Drug Mart will celebrate a number of changes made to the drug mart with official grand re-opening ceremonies this week of their new store; and
Whereas the changes have included the pharmacy becoming more technologically advanced, with greatly enhanced improvements to the pharmacy's home health care area;
Therefore be it resolved that MLAs acknowledge the hard work and dedication of co-owners Robert Perry, Cathryn Spurrell and Sandra Penney as they continue to improve the services available for customers at Valley Drug Mart in Middleton.

Whereas Route 327, also known as the Marion Bridge Highway, has been identified as a priority of upgrading and repaving by the Department of Transportation and Public Works officials and senior staff; and
Whereas this highway has not received major upgrading in more than 30 years; and
Whereas close to 3,000 vehicles use this highway daily;
Therefore be it resolved that the Minister of Transportation and Public Works ensures tenders are called for the upgrading of this highway as per local departmental priorities.

Whereas the domestic circumstances surrounding the February 28th murder-suicide involving 31 year old Lori Maxwell and her common-law husband Bruce George of Truro are being investigated by the Department of Justice; and
Whereas last Wednesday, May 24th, Richard Allen Lee was charged in the death of Lisa Marie McNeil of Halifax, acting in violation of a restraining order after being charged with assaulting Ms. McNeil only a month earlier; and
Whereas this government recently cut off funding to eight victim support services' projects across the province, all valuable programs that assisted in reducing the occurrences and impact of domestic violence against women;
Therefore be it resolved that this government undertake an examination of the adequacy of victims support service programming in Nova Scotia and undertake an inquiry into the enforcement levels of restraining orders and other protection services for victims of domestic violence.

Whereas 14 employees, including cooks and dishwashers, will lose their jobs;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House condemn the government which is responsible for this shameful downgrade in quality that is happening at the QE II.

Whereas since this is Access Awareness Week, it would send a strong message if the Minister of Business and Consumer Services moved immediately to change the Motive Fuel and Fuel Oil Approval Regulations to ensure provision of full-service gas, in some form, at every gas station;
Therefore be it resolved that the Minister of Business and Consumer Services act quickly on this suggestion to access seniors and the disabled.

Whereas there have been many revelations of inadequate patient care at this facility, including no IV poles, nurse resignations, nurses off on stress leave, and inadequate ratios of caregivers to patients; and
Whereas the owners of the Mira donated over $10,500 to the Tories in 1999, including $5,000 to the Premier and $2,500 to the Minister of Health;
Therefore be it resolved that this government focus its attention on improving the quality of patient care at long-term care facilities rather than on simply rewarding political friends at taxpayers' expense.

Whereas the students outperformed students from Columbia, Rutgers and the New Jersey Institute of Technology with a structure that had the best stiffness and lightness and was the speediest to construct;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House congratulate these Dal-Tech students on their recent success in the field of bridge construction.

Whereas the Premier's buddy donated more than $35,000 to the Progressive Conservative Party last year; and
Whereas profits earned by the Premier's buddy are in excess of $50 million, with the province receiving a paltry $279,000 in royalties;
Therefore be it resolved that this government act immediately to renegotiate its royalty deal with the Premier's buddy, and request an equitable deal that better reflects what coal royalties should be in this province.

Whereas thanks to three families from Clare, three young girls from Chernobyl will have the opportunity to spend several weeks this summer in the community of Clare;
Therefore be it resolved that the members of this House extend their thanks to Mike and Lindy Aucoin, Dr. Lionel and Roberte d'Entremont, and Daniel and Myra Comeau for their generous and humane gesture to provide a home away from home to these young people who have suffered so much.

Therefore be it resolved that the Minister responsible for Sysco and the Premier immediately travel to Cape Breton to update the steelworkers on the sale and restart pension negotiations.

Whereas murmured platitudes of "I understand your frustration," does not cut it with steelworkers and their families;
Therefore be it resolved that instead of trying to pat steelworkers on the head and telling them Uncle Johnnie will take care of them, the Premier do as he promised and begin negotiations for meaningful pensions and severance packages for these workers.
