An Act to Declare Intimate
Partner Violence an Epidemic

WHEREAS the Final Report of the Mass Casualty Commission found that “Gender-based, intimate partner, and family violence is an epidemic”;

AND WHEREAS Recommendation V.14 of the Report recommends that “All levels of government in Canada declare gender-based, intimate partner, and family violence to be an epidemic that warrants a meaningful and sustained society-wide response”;

AND WHEREAS, according to the Report, the use of the term “epidemic” underscores the fact that “gender-based, intimate partner, and family violence continue to be excessively prevalent in Nova Scotia”;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Intimate Partner Violence Epidemic Act.
