Explanatory Note

This Bill requires the Minister of Justice to provide sufficient funding to municipalities or police agencies such that on-duty policing is provided 24 hours per day in every area of Nova Scotia.

An Act to Amend Chapter 31
of the Acts of 2004,
the Police Act

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 31 of the Acts of 2004, the Police Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 5 the following Section:

    5A (1) Subject to subsection (3), the Minister shall ensure sufficient funding is provided to municipalities or agencies such that on-duty policing is provided 24 hours per day in every area of the Province.

    (2) A municipality or agency that receives funding under subsection (1) shall use the funding to provide on-duty policing 24 hours per day in the area of the Province served by its police force.

    (3) The money required for the purpose of subsection (1) must be paid out of the money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
