Explanatory Note

This Bill authorizes the Minister of Natural Resources and Renewables to ensure that useable wood is salvaged and forests are cleaned up after natural disasters.

An Act to Amend Chapter 179
of the Revised Statutes, 1989,
the Forests Act,
Respecting Forest Cleanups
Following Natural Disasters

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 179 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Forests Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 31 the following Section:

    31A (1) The Minister shall, on or before April 1, 2024, ensure that members of the forestry industry are able to enter, retrieve viable wood from and clean up forests after a natural disaster.

    (2) The Minister may require members of the forestry industry to enter and clean up forests in a timely and efficient manner after a natural disaster.

    (3) The Governor in Council may make any regulations necessary to enable forest cleanups after natural disasters in accordance with subsections (1) and (2).

    (4) The exercise by the Governor in Council of the authority in subsection (3) is a regulation within the meaning of the Regulations Act.
