An Act to Raise Awareness
of the Harmful Impacts of Lead
and Enhance Public Safety
1 This Act may be cited as the Lead Awareness and Public Safety Act.
2 The purpose of this Act to is address the dangers of lead by mandating clear packaging labels for lead tackle, lead ammunition and lead tire weights while emphasizing the harmful impacts of lead on the environment, wildlife and human health.
(a) "lead tackle" means fishing weights, sinkers, lures or any other fishing equipment containing lead;
(b) "lead ammunition" means bullets, shot or any other projectiles used in firearms or hunting activities that contain lead;
(c) "lead tire weights" means weights that contain lead and are used to balance the wheels of vehicles.
4 (1) All lead tackle, lead ammunition and lead tire weights sold in the Province must be clearly labelled with warning signs, health hazard information and instruction for safe handling and disposal that meet the requirements established under subsection (2).
(2) The Minister of Environment and Climate Change shall, in consultation with relevant stakeholders and experts in public health, establish labelling requirements for the purpose of subsection (1).
(3) The labelling requirements must emphasize the harmful impacts of lead on the environment, wildlife and human health, including
(a) contamination of ecosystems;
(b) poisoning risks to wildlife; and
(c) potential adverse effects on human development, especially in children.5 This Act comes into force on such day as the Governor in Council orders and declares by proclamation.
