An Act to Establish
a Food Recovery Program

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Food Recovery Act.

2 In this Act, “imperfect produce” means fruits and vegetables that are safe and edible, but do not meet the aesthetic standards to be sold in grocery stores.

3 (1) Subject to Section 4, the Government shall establish a food recovery program to reduce food waste and food insecurity.

(2) Under the food recovery program, the Government shall partner with Provincial farmers to buy their imperfect produce to give away or sell at a reduced price to Nova Scotians living on low income.

4 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
