An Act to Provide for
the Development of a Charter for
Cape Breton Regional Municipality

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Charter Act.

2 The purpose of this Act is to recognize the demographic and economic challenges facing the Municipality by providing the Municipality with a charter similar to the Halifax Regional Municipality Charter.

3 In this Act,

(a) "charter" means an Act to govern a municipality largely in place of the Municipal Government Act;

(b) "Minister" means the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing;

(c) "Municipality" means Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

4 The Minister shall work with the Municipality to develop an appropriate charter for the Municipality.

5 Within two years of this Act coming into force, the Minister shall introduce a bill creating a charter for the Municipality.
