Explanatory Note

This Bill requires students in grade 10 to take a career development course and sets out subjects that the course must cover.

An Act to Amend Chapter 1
of the Acts of 1995-96,
the Education Act

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 Chapter 1 of the Acts of 1995-96, the Education Act, is amended by adding immediately after Section 24 the following Section:

    24A (1) Every student shall, in grade 10, take a career development course.

    (2) The career development course must give students information respecting

    (a) the value of money;

    (b) the responsible use of credit cards;

    (c) the responsible use of debit cards;

    (d) the difference between credit cards and debit cards;

    (e) options for loans for pursuing higher education;

    (f) creating a budget;

    (g) paying a bill;

    (h) retirement savings, including registered retirement savings accounts and tax-free savings accounts;

    (i) insurance;

    (j) wills;

    (k) mutual funds; and

    (l) filing a tax return.
