An Act to Appoint the Chief of Protocol

Be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Chief of Protocol Appointment Act.

2 In this Act,

(a) "Chief of Protocol" means the Chief of Protocol in the Protocol Office, a division of the Department of Intergovernmental Affairs;

(b) "committee" means a committee appointed pursuant to Section 3.

3 Where the office of Chief of Protocol becomes or is about to become vacant, the Governor in Council shall appoint a committee comprising

(a) two of the chiefs of protocol from the governments of the other provinces of Canada or of Canada; and

(b) a past Chief of Protocol or the current Chief of Protocol.

4 (1) The committee shall solicit applications from individuals seeking appointment as Chief of Protocol and shall nominate for appointment the individual that the committee determines to be the most qualified to fill the vacancy.

(2) The Governor in Council shall appoint the individual nominated by the committee as Chief of Protocol.

5 Subject to Section 6, a member of the committee shall receive such remuneration as the Governor in Council may determine, and shall be reimbursed for reasonable expenses actually incurred in connection with the activities of the committee.

6 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
