An Act to Establish a Transportation
and Accommodation Subsidy Program
for Out-of-Province Medical Referrals

WHEREAS patients are sometimes referred for medical treatment or care that cannot be provided in Nova Scotia;

AND WHEREAS the costs of transportation and accommodation can act as a deterrent for some people seeking treatment or can have devastating financial consequences to families;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Out-of-Province Medical Referral Act.

2 Subject to Section 4, the Minister of Health shall establish a program to assist with expenses incurred for transportation and accommodation by patients with respect to medical care received outside of the Province and by their medically required escorts.

3 (1) The Governor in Council may make regulations respecting any matter or thing that the Governor in Council considers necessary or advisable to carry out the intent and purpose of this Act.

(2) The exercise by the Governor in Council of the authority contained in subsection (1) is regulations within the meaning of the Regulations Act.

4 The moneys required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of moneys appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.

5 This Act comes into force on such day as the Governor in Council orders and declares by proclamation.
