An Act to Establish Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder
Awareness Month

WHEREAS Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD) are rare inherited conditions that affect connective tissues and can have mild to severe or potentially life-threatening symptoms;

AND WHEREAS there is no cure for EDS or HSD;

AND WHEREAS improved awareness and knowledge of EDS and HSD can contribute to more effective disease management, improved quality of life and reduced disability and pain for those living with EDS or HSD;

AND WHEREAS early and accurate diagnosis can provide opportunities for life-saving medical plans and proper monitoring to improve quality of life for those living with EDS or HSD;

AND WHEREAS it is estimated that at least one in every 100,000 Canadians have EDS or HSD, but little is known about these conditions in the general public and in fact many more people may suffer from EDS or HSD and not know it;

AND WHEREAS more needs to be done to ensure Nova Scotians know more about these chronic pain diseases through knowledge sharing resources, education campaigns, wellness support and research;

THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:

1 This Act may be cited as the Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month Act.

2 Throughout the Province, in each and every year, the month of May shall be kept and observed under the name Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder Awareness Month.
