An Act to Provide Families
with School Supplies Relief
1 This Act may be cited as the School Supplies Relief Act.
(a) "Conseil scolaire acadien provincial" has the same meaning as in the Education (CSAP) Act;
(b) "école acadienne" has the same meaning as in the Education (CSAP) Act;
(c) "Minister" means the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development;
(d) "principal" includes a principal as defined in the Education Act and in the Education (CSAP) Act;
(e) "regional centre" has the same meaning as in the Education Act;
(f) "regional executive director" has the same meaning as in the Education Act;
(g) "school supplies" include paper, pencils, scissors and other supplies required by students for their school year;
(h) "school region" has the same meaning as in the Education (CSAP) Act;
(i) "student" means a person over the age of five years and under the age of 21 years who is registered at a public school;
(j) "teacher" includes a teacher as defined in the Education Act and in the Education (CSAP) Act;
3 (1) Teachers who require students to have certain school supplies for use in their classroom shall provide a list of those school supplies to the principal of the school where they work on or before July 1st of each year.
(2) Principals shall provide the school supply list and number of students for each classroom in their school to
(a) the regional executive director for the regional centre in which the school is located; or
(b) in the case of an école acadienne, to the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial,
on or before July 15th of each year.
4 The regional executive directors for each of the regional centres in the Province and the superintendent of the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial shall submit a list of the school supplies and quantities required for all of the schools in their regional centre or school region to the Minister on or before July 30th of each year.
5 (1) Subject to Section 6, the Minister shall ensure that the required school supplies are
(a) purchased from local vendors; and
(b) provided to each regional centre and the Conseil scolaire acadien provincial for distribution to individual schools on or before August 15th of each year.
(2) Subject to Section 6, the Minister may hire such additional temporary staff necessary to assist with the ordering, purchasing and distributing the school supplies.
(3) The Minister may establish criteria for determining whether a vendor is a local vendor for the purpose of subsection (1).
6 The money required for the purpose of this Act must be paid out of money appropriated for that purpose by the Legislature.
