An Act to Implement the Calls to Action
of the Truth and Reconciliation
Commission of Canada
AND WHEREAS the Report included Calls to Action based on the Commission's examination of the residential school system for Aboriginal children and its finding that the system "was an education system in name only for much of its existence";
AND WHEREAS the Report followed the 1996 Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples;
AND WHEREAS the Government of Canada has committed to fully implement the Calls to Action of the Commission;
AND WHEREAS reconciliation is an ongoing process of establishing and maintaining respectful relationships that must be embraced by governments at all levels, and that relies on education as an important component of the process;
AND WHEREAS a number of the Calls to Action are directed to matters that are within provincial jurisdiction;
THEREFORE be it enacted by the Governor and Assembly as follows:
1 This Act may be cited as the Truth and Reconciliation Commitment Act.
2 The Province is committed to implementing the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada as set out in the Commission's Final Report, "Honouring the Truth, Reconciling for the Future".
3 The Premier shall table annually a report in the House of Assembly on the Province's progress towards implementing the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.
