STANDING COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RESOURCES

9:00 A.M.

CHAIRMAN

Mr. Keith Irving

MR. CHAIRMAN: Good morning everyone. I would like to call our meeting of the Standing Committee on Human Resources to order. I’m Keith Irving, the chairman of this committee. We have a short agenda this morning where we will be making appointments to agencies, boards and commissions - six appointments here today to consider.

I’d like to ask the committee members to introduce themselves.

            [The committee members introduced themselves.]

MR. CHAIRMAN: Thank you and welcome. Just a reminder to keep your phones off for a few seconds here as we go through the meeting. There will be no business other than the appointments to these committees. With that, I would just like to move directly into committee business. I’m looking for four separate motions as we’re making appointments to four different boards. Mr. Farrell.

MR. TERRY FARRELL: Mr. Chairman, I move that Dale Fawthrop and Jane Wood be appointed to the Cumberland Regional Library Board.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

            The motion is carried.

            Mr. Wilson, please.

MR. GORDON WILSON: I move that Sherry Brideau be appointed as a member to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library Board.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

            The motion is carried.

            Ms. Treen.

MS. JOYCE TREEN: I move that Donald Armstrong and Clarence Humber be appointed as members to the Sherbrooke Restoration Commission.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

            The motion is carried.

            Mr. Wilson.

MR. GORDON WILSON: I move that Kirk Arsenault be appointed as member at large to the Council on Mi’kmaq Education.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

            The motion is carried.

Well done, ladies and gentlemen.

The next meeting will be December 15th. I’ve just had a brief discussion with our clerk. Because we don’t know if the House will be sitting, and given the Christmas dates, we would assume that we would not have a witness, as opposed to setting them up and not knowing whether we’re cancelling them at the last minute. Is the committee in agreement with that?

I see nodding heads and I’ve heard a few “agreed,” so the next meeting will be December 15th. We will again just deal with appointments to agencies, boards and commissions.     Mr. Orrell.

MR. EDDIE ORRELL: If for some strange reason we’re not sitting at that time, will that hour still stand or will it be another hour of the day? We’ve been known to move it when the Legislature isn’t sitting. We can leave that to the discretion of the chairman if that’s the case.

MR. GORDON WILSON: You trust him, then?

MR. ORRELL: Him I do, yes. (Laughter)

MR. CHAIRMAN: All right then, it will be December 15th, with the time to be confirmed with a couple of days’ notice for folks. Does that work for everyone?

With that, I’ll call the meeting adjourned. Thank you very much.

[The committee adjourned at 9:04 a.m.]
