STANDING COMMITTEE ON HUMAN RESOURCES

4:00 P.M.

CHAIRMAN

Mr. Keith Irving

MR. CHAIRMAN: Good afternoon everyone, I’d like to call the meeting to order. This is the Standing Committee on Human Resources, a meeting that was supposed to be held a few days ago but we needed to reschedule, so I’d like to thank everyone for agreeing to meet today on relatively short notice to deal with a short agenda. It certainly is better than coming back next week or between Christmas and New Year’s.

My name is Keith Irving, I’m chairing the committee here today, and today we’ll be reviewing the appointments to several ABCs. I’d like to begin by asking committee members to introduce themselves.

[The committee members introduced themselves.]

MR. CHAIRMAN: Thank you. We have committee business here today, two items. The first item is correspondence, and you have a copy of that before you. It’s from the Department of Labour and Advanced Education. Does the committee agree to accept the receipt of the correspondence?

Is it agreed?

It is agreed. Thank you very much.

Secondly, we have the appointments to agencies, boards and commissions. There’s a list before you of three boards that we are making appointments to today, with your blessing. I’m wondering if I have a motion for three members to the Council on African-Canadian Education. Mr. Gough.

MR. STEPHEN GOUGH: Mr. Chairman, I move that the three names be appointed to the Council on African-Canadian Education.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Mr. Gough, I’m wondering if you would just state the names as part of your motion.

MR. GOUGH: Yes, Mr. Chairman. The names listed are: Reverend William Crawford, member representing Southwest Nova; Mary Desmond, member representing Antigonish-Guysborough; and Selena Jones, member representing Dartmouth.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

The motion is carried.

MR. GORDON WILSON: Mr. Chairman, I move that Keith Dexter be appointed as director to the Liquor Corporation of Nova Scotia.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contrary minded, Nay.

The motion is carried.

MR. GORDON WILSON: Mr. Chairman, I move that Jerry Blumenthal, Joan Boutilier, and Cheryl Knockwood be appointed as commissioners to the Human Rights Commission.

MR. CHAIRMAN: Is there any discussion? Would all those in favour of the motion please say Aye. Contray minded, Nay.

The motion is carried.

That concludes our business. The next meeting for this committee is set for January 25th at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon; we will have a witness from the Department of Labour and Advanced Education with respect to university sandboxes. We also may be making appointments to agencies, boards and commissions.

If there’s no further business, I’d like to adjourn the meeting. Thank you very much.

[The committee adjourned at 4:03 p.m.]
